Bishop Kulick, The Catholic Accent Staff Honored with Communication Accolades

The Diocese of Greensburg’s television, magazine and social media platforms, under the direction of Bishop Larry J. Kulick, recently received Catholic Media Association, Telly and Communicator Awards for spiritual and religious writing, video production and branded content.

The Catholic Media Association awards acknowledge outstanding work by Catholic Communicators across North America as they strive to further the mission of the Church. The Telly Awards is the largest honor for video and television content across all screens, receiving 12,000 entries from all 50 states and five continents. The Communicator Awards are presented by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts and receive more than 5,000 entries each year from around the country.

The Accent On-Air

Bishop Larry Kulick, in his first television broadcast called The Accent On-Air “Christmas Traditions” was honored with a Communicator Award of Distinction for religious and spiritual television and a silver Telly Award for Religious and Spiritual Television. “Christmas Traditions” also doubled as a special edition magazine and featured a story about Bishop Kulick’s Slovak heritage detailing how his roots influenced his priestly formation. That story won a Communicator Award of Distinction for feature writing by Chief Communications Officer Jennifer Miele and Editor Paul Paterra. Another story in the episode was an Eastern European nut roll feature, which doubled as a social media package, and won third place for best use of video on social media by the Catholic Media Association. That story was produced by Mary Seamans, Multimedia Journalist for The Catholic Accent. The television show and magazine are produced by the entire team at The Catholic Accent.

The Accent On-Air won a second place Gabriel Award for narrative series storytelling from the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals and honors excellence in broadcasting.

Heroes of Hope Guardian Angel Appeal to support Catholic Charities

The pandemic forced Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Greensburg to cancel all fundraising events, yet the call for help to Catholic Charities by those impacted by COVID-19 was greater than ever. In an effort to raise more than $250,000 in funds to provide direct COVID-19 relief, frontline heroes throughout the Diocese of Greensburg were featured in first-ever Guardian Angel Appeal. The appeal was given a Communicator Award of Distinction for best public service campaign, social media campaign and marketing effectiveness. The appeal also won a bronze Telly Award for non-profit online fundraising, second place for best social media campaign and second place for best ad campaign by the Catholic Media Association. The campaign was led by Monsignor Raymond E. Riffle, former Managing Director of Catholic Charities, Heathy Rady, Director of Community Relations & Special Events, Jennifer Miele, Chief Communications Officer, Robin Mull, Director of Marketing, Multimedia Journalist Mary Seamans and Jordan Whiteko, Multimedia Content Manager.

Energy Smart 2020

Energy Smart 2020 was a Diocesan educational initiative designed to educate the young faithful about the importance of caring for God’s creations. More than 20,000 youth in the Diocese of Greensburg were impacted by the initiative in Catholic schools, parish faith formation classes and television broadcasts. The campaign won a Communicator Award for Excellence and a silver Telly Award for Religious and Spiritual Television. The education campaign was also honored for non-traditional use of video and video editing, along with public service and activism, and as best non-profit campaign for use of branded content. The campaign was produced by Multimedia Content Manager Jordan Whiteko and the outreach program was supported by Beth Tallentire, office manager. The year 2020 marked the fifth anniversary of “Laudato si,” a letter written by Pope Francis to all the world’s Bishops about the care for our common home. It also marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, which prompted governmental actions to protect our air, water and endangered species.

TOP Student Program

The TOP Student program, also known as the St. Pope John Paul Tuition Opportunity Partnership, provided financial assistance to more than 800 students in the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Greensburg and helped to increase enrollment by 13%. The marketing campaign to publicize the initiative won a Communicator Award of Distinction for Integrated Campaign for Marketing Effectiveness and second place for best multimedia package from the Catholic Media Association. The TOP Student Brochure, won a Communicator Award of Distinction for best educational brochure. The creative campaign was designed by John Zylka, Director of Visual Communications, Jordan Whiteko, Multimedia Content Manager and Robin Mull, Director of Marketing. Dr. Maureen Marsteller, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, served a contributing editor on the campaign.

Communications Professional of the Year, North America

Jennifer Miele, Chief Communications Officer of the Diocese of Greensburg, was named by the Catholic Media Association as Communication Professional of the Year 2021, North America, for the second time. Miele won the honor in 2019, as well as Marketing Professional of Year by the CMA in 2020.

Social Media Professional of the Year

Robin Mull, Marketing Director at the Diocese of Greensburg, received an honorable mention for Social Media Professional of the Year in North America for her work on special appeals and Catholic School Marketing initiatives.

Multimedia Content Manager, Jordan Whiteko, Honored for Excellence as TV Producer

Jordan Whiteko, Multimedia Content Manager at The Catholic Accent, won a Communicator Award for Excellence and a silver Telly Award as a producer for spiritual television for “Energy Smart 2020.”

Whiteko’s environmental education campaign was also honored for non-traditional use of video and video editing, along with public service and activism, and as best non-profit campaign for use of branded content. John Zylka, Director of Visual Communications at the Diocese of Greensburg, has been honored with a Communicator Award of Distinction for Marketing Effectiveness and second place for the best multimedia package from the Catholic Media Association. Zylka designed an integrated marketing campaign for the TOP Student program.

Mary Seamans, Multimedia Journalist for The Catholic Accent, received Catholic Media, Telly and Communicator Awards for spiritual and religious video production and social media development. Seamans produced an Eastern European nut roll feature for The Accent On-Air on WTAE, which doubled as a social media package, and won third place for best use of video on social media by the Catholic Media Association.

CMA names Jennifer Miele Communicator of the Year, North America 2021

Jennifer Miele, Chief Communications Officer of the Diocese of Greensburg and Managing Director of Evangelization, was named by the Catholic Media Association as Communication Professional of the Year 2021, North America, for the second time.

Miele won the same honor in 2019, as well as Marketing Professional of Year by the CMA in 2020. Miele joined the Diocese of Greensburg in 2018 and immediately announced the new multi-media Catholic Accent, which included an online newspaper, television show and magazine in addition to the traditional newspaper. Under the direction of Bishop Larry J. The Diocese of Greensburg’s magazine, under the direction of Bishop Larry J. Kulick, recently received Catholic Media Association and Communicator Awards for spiritual and religious writing and content.

“Christmas Traditions” was as a special edition magazine in December of 2020 and featured a story about Bishop Larry Kulick’s Slovak heritage detailing how his roots influenced his priestly formation. That story won a Communicator Award of Distinction for feature writing. The magazine’s editor is Paul Paterra.
