GREENSBURG – The Office of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Greensburg has announced that John “JT” Thompson, current head football coach for the Greensburg Central Catholic Junior-Senior High School Centurions, has been hired as the school’s athletic director. Thompson will replace Daniel Mahoney, who after 42 years as an administrator, teacher, coach and athletic director, announced his retirement at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
Superintendent of Catholic Schools Dr. Nancy Rottler said Thompson will bring his depth of experience as a collegiate and high school coach as well as his understanding of Catholic education to his new role.
“Throughout his career, JT has coached at several small private Catholic institutions, including Marist College, Sacred Heart University, Saint Vincent College and Saint Francis University,” said Dr. Rottler. “These experiences have equipped him with a unique perspective on the role of athletics in fostering a supportive and faith-based community, and we are delighted with JT taking on this new role at GCC.”
GCC Principal Theresa Szmed said Thompson’s proven record of accomplishment in developing successful teams on the field and emphasizing the importance of academic achievement off the field is an asset for the student athletic program.
“I have watched as JT implemented impressive training programs while maintaining a positive team culture,” Szmed said. “He understands the mission of our school in providing an exemplary education while developing the skills our student athletes need in life beyond, such as responsibility, compassion and success.”
Thompson said he was drawn to the position because he shares the vision of a commitment to a strong Catholic foundation and academic excellence.
“I am committed to creating a well-rounded athletic program that not only excels on the track, field, court and diamond but also serves as a catalyst for student development and community engagement,” Thompson said. “I am eager to contribute to this mission by building a robust athletic program that not only supports the school’s academic goals but also fosters a sense of community and pride among students, faculty and alumni.”
Thompson and his wife, Sarah, are the parents of three children. The family lives in Greensburg and are parishioners at Saint Vincent Basilica Parish in Latrobe.
