A new athletic field is expected to jump-start sports programming at Geibel Catholic Junior-Senior High School. That could lead to an increase in student population, according to Principal Robert Fetter.
Baseball and softball will be played on the new field this spring, which was completed in the fall.
Fetter said there’s a buzz about restarting the school’s baseball program, which has been dormant since 2019.
In recent seasons, Geibel Catholic has been part of cooperative agreements with the Southmoreland School District for football and girls’ soccer and Connellsville Area School District for girls’ tennis. Geibel Catholic also has girls’ and boys’ basketball.
“We’ve lost students in the past not having multiple athletic programs,” Fetter said. “We have prospects and they want to play at Geibel Catholic in junior high and high school.
The field was completed with a matching grant of $6,500 from the Pirates Charities Fields for Kids program.
