MURRYSVIILE – On March 27 and 28, 2026, Mother of Sorrows Youth Ministry will present the Living Stations of the Cross. The student cast will portray vignettes of Jesus Christ’s passion and death, while leading those gathered in meditation and prayer.
This year marks the 30th presentation of the Living Stations at Mother of Sorrows, a tradition begun in 1995 by the parish’s first youth minister. Over the 30 years, more than 200 youth have participated in this prayerful experience. Xavier Miller, who portrays Jesus in this year’s presentation, is the son of Jared Miller, who played the same role in the first Living Stations at MOS 30 years ago.
The practice of praying the Stations of the Cross has evolved over time. In the fourth century AD, Christians began to gather and pray along the pathway that Jesus walked through Jerusalem during His Passion. Today, Catholic churches typically display a series of plaques or paintings that depict the Stations, or scenes leading up to Christ’s death. In the Living Stations of the Cross, the scenes are acted out, which gives both the actors and those assembled a more vivid experience.
This year, the Living Stations of the Cross will be presented in Mother of Sorrows School at 7pm on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28. In honor of the 30th annual presentation, a reception will be held in the parish social hall on Friday evening, featuring light refreshments and a photo retrospective of the three-decade tradition. Alumni are encouraged to attend the reception for a group photo.
Everyone in the community is invited to attend the Living Stations of the Cross. There is no admission cost, but a free will offering will be collected to support a Youth Ministry summer mission trip to repair homes in Indiana in collaboration with Catholic Heart Workcamp.
