Sister Lois Sculco, age 84, entered eternal life in her 63rd year of religious life

SISTER LOIS SCULCO, SC, age 84, entered eternal life at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg, on April 5, 2023 in her 63rd year of religious life.

Sister Lois was born on November 12, 1938, in New Kensington, PA.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Rose (Condelli) Sculco, her brother Thomas, and a cousin, Sister Mary Arleen Squitieri, SC. She is survived by her sister-in-law Lorraine Sculco; her nieces, Lisa, Loren and Jennine and their families; lifelong New Kensington friends, Sharon Carpenter and Msgr. John Regoli; and her religious community.

Sister Lois loved Seton Hill University from the time she attended college and graduated with a degree in Psychology and English. She earned Masters of Arts degrees in English (Duquesne University) and Human Resource Development (Azusa Pacific University) and a Ph.D. from the Fielding Graduate Institute in Human Development.

After earning her bachelor’s degree, she entered the Sisters of Charity and taught in the Diocese of Pittsburgh at Bishop Canevin, Holy Innocents, and Elizabeth Seton High Schools for seven years. She then returned to Seton Hill University, which she called “home.” At the University, she served in various teaching positions and was Assistant Dean of Women.

Sister Lois was elected to the administrative team of the Sisters of Charity for a four-year term and then returned to Seton Hill University to serve as Vice President for Administration and Student Life and Mission.   In this position, she had administrative responsibility for the National Catholic Institute for Holocaust Education and served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees and as the Affirmative Action Officer of the University

Sister Lois’ commitment to the underserved led her to serve on a number of community boards including: Westmoreland County Community College, The Blackburn Center Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, the Greensburg Youth Commission, the Racial Justice Task Force and the Executive Board of the NAACP, Central Westmoreland Unity Coalition, and on the Greensburg Diocese Social Concerns Project.  In addition to these committees, she also served on various Sisters of Charity and diocesan committees.

Sister’s accomplishments have been recognized by awards including the Arnold Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Professional Achievement Award in the field of education and administration, selected one of the Nation’s ten most outstanding freshman advocates;  the Community Service Award for her establishment of the Seton Hill University Chapter of the NAACP and recognition for her many contributions in the community; the March of Remembrance and Hope Award for her vision and commitment to Holocaust education; and the John McGrady Award in recognition of her humanitarianism and her dedicated service to the Catholic Youth Association of Pittsburgh.  The Westmoreland Columbus 500 also paid tribute to Sister Lois for her leadership role in education and for her service on several boards in Greensburg.

After Sister Lois moved to the sisters’ motherhouse Caritas Christi in 2018, she maintained her involvement with Seton Hill University as President for Alumni Engagement and Mission until 2021.  She followed the motto of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the Sisters of Charity, and Seton Hill University – “Hazard Yet Forward” – in all of her undertakings until her well-being required she take a rest.  The Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill are very grateful to the nursing staff and employees for their excellent care of Sister Lois when she knew it was time to resign from active ministry.

Of her life as a Sister of Charity, Sister Lois reflected at the time of her 50th anniversary, “Life as a Sister of Charity has given me a great opportunity to serve the Church and the people of God in so many ways. In particular, to spend so many years in the ministry to students at Seton Hill University.  I have had many opportunities to travel in ways that were life changing experiences: to Korea several times to see the ministry and life of our sisters there; to take many study tours to Israel and study at Yad Vashem; to take students to Poland to study the Holocaust and visit the camps; to take the Women’s Spirituality Tour to Italy; to take the study tour to China with the SHU Alumnae.”

Sister Lois, may you rejoice in God’s call to perfect and eternal charity with St. Elizabeth Seton and all the heavenly Company of Charity.
