Sister Maureen Halloran, SC, in her 73rd year of religious life

Sister Maureen Halloran, SC, age 91,  entered eternal life at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg, on March 25, 2023, in her 73rd year of religious life.

Sister Maureen entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1950, from Saint Agatha Parish in Bridgeville, PA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Florence (Rathman) Halloran, and is survived by lifelong friends, Dr. and Mrs. Tom Simone, John and Linda Eicher, Pauline Morgan, and her religious community.

Sister Maureen earned numerous degrees that qualified her for many positions in the healthcare field. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in guidance from Duquesne University. She also earned a master’s degree in finance, administration, and business from Carnegie Mellon University. She did postgraduate work in medical and surgical nursing and nursing administration at the University of Pittsburgh and earned a certificate in coronary care nursing from Rutgers University.

Sister Maureen was a gifted nurse who used her talents to minister in diverse ways. She always demonstrated competency, compassion, and concern, and provided excellent care to each individual she served. She began her nurses’ training at Providence Hospital in Beaver Falls, PA, and was missioned to Seton Hill University as an infirmarian and was transferred later to McGuire Memorial Hospital for night duty. She then served at Pittsburgh Hospital as a night supervisor. She returned to Providence Hospital as a supervisor and instructor in obstetrics. Sister Maureen was subsequently reassigned to Pittsburgh Hospital where she was a medical and clinical instructor. She was an instructor in coronary and critical care at Presbyterian Hospital and then began a twenty-two-year tenure of ministry at Mercy Hospital, serving successively as a clinical specialist in cardiovascular nursing, assistant executive director of nursing, assistant to the nursing executive director for special projects and nursing research, administrative assistant and as a member of the Ministry of Healing where she greeted patients, families and all who came for Sunday Mass and services.

In her last years of ministering at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, Maureen applied her years of experience to help designing doctors’ offices, and testing areas.

In 1999, Sister Maureen moved to the motherhouse in Greensburg where she volunteered her services in research to the Sisters of Charity administration. When she retired, the nurses, aides, and employees provided dedicated, loving care for which the Sisters of Charity are grateful.

Reflecting on her life as a Sister of Charity, Sister Maureen remarked, “Religious life has been rewarding and has benefitted my ministries.”

Rest in peace, Sister Maureen, as your loving and faithful God welcomes you home with all the Company of Charity.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, March 28, at Caritas Christi Motherhouse, 129 DePaul Center Road, Greensburg, PA from 2 pm to 7:00 pm. A prayer vigil with sharing of memories in the Chapel of Assumption will immediately follow.
