Diocesan couples celebrate 50 years of marriage

Every year couples gather at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg for the Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass, which honors couples who have been married for 50 years.
Bishop Edward C. Malesic celebrated this year’s Mass for more than 100 couples and several hundred family members and friends who filled the cathedral to celebrate the public witness to married life.
Bishop Malesic loves this Mass, he says, because he gets to see couples who have lived their vows by staying together in sickness and health and in good times and bad.
“It is a joy to see how the couples relate to one another by becoming friends for life,” he said.
Deacon William J. Hisker and his wife, Vera, who were among the couples celebrating the joyous occasion, gave their advice for having a long-lasting marriage.
“You can’t be married 50 years without faith. Faith is critical because it gets you through the bad times and allows you to celebrate the good times,” Deacon Hisker said as Vera nodded in agreement.
Couples who will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2020 should contact their parish for information and to register for the Mass, which will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral Sept. 20.
