(Greensburg, Pa. – March 6, 2022) Bishop Larry J. Kulick welcomed 28 catechumens and 47 candidates from around the Diocese of Greensburg on Sunday, March 6, as they were presented for the Rite of Election at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral.
The rite, held on the first Sunday of Lent, allows each of the candidates and catechumens to affirm their intention to join the Catholic Church and inscribe their names into the Book of the Elect as a pledge of fidelity. Throughout the remainder of Lent, the candidates and catechumens will continue their preparation to receive the sacraments.
Catechumens, who have never been baptized, will receive baptism, confirmation and first Communion at the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil. Candidates, who have already been baptized in another Christian tradition whose baptism is recognized by the Catholic Church, will enter the Church through a profession of faith and reception of confirmation and Eucharist.
