Sister Marian Joseph Adams SC, in her 75th year of religious life

SISTER MARIAN JOSEPH ADAMS SC, age 93, entered eternal life at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg, on February 26, 2023 in her 75th year of religious life. 

Born in Altoona, PA, Sister Marian Joseph was the third of nine children.  She entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1948, from Saint Patrick Parish, Cleveland, Ohio.  Preceded in death by her parents, Ernest B. and Rose E. (Carr) Adams;three brothers, Joseph E., Bernard E., Maurice (Butch); two sisters, Mrs. Nicholas (Catherine (Kate) Mester, Barbara Adams; two cousins, Sister Mary Edna Trexler, SC, and Sister Mary Timothy Adams SC.  She is survived by a brother, William; two sisters, Mrs. Jane (Robert) Bruening, Sister Ann Patrick SC; 51 nieces and nephews; 108 grand nieces and nephews; 56 great nieces and nephews; and a cousin, Sister Mary McCauley, SC.  

Sister Marian Joseph earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Seton Hill University and a master’s degree in human development and gerontology from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, Connecticut.  Throughout her career, she taught students in the dioceses of Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Tucson and the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  She served as vice principal at Sacred Heart School in Glyndon, MD and at Saint Mary/Saint Mary-Basha School in Chandler, AZ. Then for four years, she volunteered to teach English conversation to Korean students at Saint Joseph School in South Korea.

Sister Marian Joseph ministered as the director of activities and programs for the retired Sisters of Charity. After her retirement, she volunteered at Caritas Christi in pastoral care office, as a driver, companion, director of transportation for retired sisters, and a number of other roles.

When reflecting on her decades of service as a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill, Sister Marian Joseph said, “It has been a life of happiness: teaching school, religious education classes, volunteering in Korea and, in later life, helping to make life pleasant and enjoyable for our senior sisters.”  As she ministered to many sisters, the Sisters of Charity are grateful to the staff at Caritas Christi who returned the same excellent care of her.

Rest in peace, Sister Marian Joseph, as you join St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and all the Company of Charity in heavenly peace.

Family and friends will be received at Caritas Christi, 129 DePaul Center Road, Greensburg, PA on Wednesday, March 1, from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm until the close of the Prayer Vigil where we share stories and memories.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday at 10:00 am in the Chapel of Assumption at Caritas Christi. Burial immediately following Mass in the Sisters’ Cemetery.
